Nebraska Welsh Heritage Tour
Our Thursday tour takes visitors south of Lincoln. We will visit the Homestead National Monument in Beatrice, a museum which commemorates the passage of the 1862 Homestead Act.
One hour south of Lincoln is Wymore, home of the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Centre. Known today as the “Welsh Capital of the Great Plains,” Wymore was home to a significant Welsh community. We will have lunch at the Welsh Heritage Centre, which contains a museum of Welsh immigrant life and the Archive for Welsh America. The tornado-proof archive is the only repository in North America for the Welsh-language newspaper, Y Drych, which dates back to 1851.
Following the museum visit we will tour the restored one-room Pleasant View Schoolhouse, once attended by many Welsh-American children; and Bethel Cemetery, final resting place of many of the original Welsh settlers and site of the former Calvinistic Methodist Church, the community’s largest Welsh church.
